Bill O'Reilly quitting radio?

From The Radio Equalizer:

Though not yet confirmed by the man himself, top- level industry sources tell the Radio Equalizer that Bill O'Reilly is giving up his nationally syndicated radio show. We're hearing his last broadcast will occur sometime in December.

I'm not a fan of Bill O'Reilly, but I always liked his radio format far more than his TV show. In both mediums, he's still an obnoxious personality.

Video: Jason Mattera confronts Jack Murtha on Haditha

To be honest, Mattera, of the Young America's Foundation, is putting on a show here by saying things like "Do you like besmurching our troops, sir?" No one will react well to a comment like that, and it's really best to look better than the other guy. Mattera just looks like a conservative Michael Moore here.

Nevertheless, it is entertaining.

Picture of the Day: Hitchens in a Mud-Mask

Taken from Christopher Hitchens' newest peice in Vanity Fair, On the Limits of Self-Improvement, Part I, it's the author in a "Moor Mud Mask" at the Four Seasons Biltmore Resort, in Santa Barbara:

Hitchens: It Was Right To Dissolve the Iraqi Army

In my opinion, one of Hitchens' best columns in a while. The ultimate contrarian takes up the ultimate criticism of Bush's "bungling" of Iraq, the decision to dissolve Saddam Hussein's military. The best part is where Hitchens' draws up what the Left would be saying if the military had been kept intact after the invasion:

Take a moment to imagine what would have been written in the liberal press had the old military class been preserved and utilized to "stabilize" Iraq. I can write the headlines for you: "Baathist War Criminal Gets Second Career as American Employee"; "Once-Wanted Man, Brigadier Kamal Now Shares Jokes With 82nd Airborne"; "Kurds and Shiites Say: What Regime Change?"; "From Basra to Kirkuk, America Brings Saddamism Without Saddam." And, if you like, I can add the names of the reporters who would have written the stories.

I can name some names too, starting with a prospective Senate candidate in Minnesota. I listened to Al Franken for several months on a regular basis back in late 2005, and nearly every single day he would hammer the whole Iraqi military thing into each listener's head as the worst and most idiotic offense a president could make during war. Somehow, I think he would be saying quite the opposite if the decision had been different.

NOTE: Expect a posting of Ron Paul's Seattle University speech shortly.

Column: No one wants another Minneapolis bridge collapse

This column was written over a month ago, but being how things can be sometimes, it didn't get out until late. I think plenty of people are still thinking about this, so my column still has an audience:

In the wake of the Minneapolis tragedy, transportation safety was widely discussed. The bridge collapse was so destructive and tragic that one has to wonder if bridges from New York to Washington state are in as much risk as the one that collapsed.

Unfortunately, politics and partisanship became the knee-jerk reaction of many elected officials. Before the bodies had even been completely counted, Senate leaders were already connecting decades of local infrastructure mistakes and oversights throwing blame around on each other.

Washington state's own teacher-turned-senator, Patty Murray, blamed the tragedy on a political tug-of-war over an infrastructure bill: "The lack of investment in infrastructure is frightening. This is what Bush is threatening to veto - investment in infrastructure for roads we go to work on every day."

Murray's comments bring up images in one's mind of Dubya crouched in the Oval Office, rubbing his hands together as he devises elaborate plans to kill rush-hour drivers.

CLOSER TO HOME

Efforts did get rolling, however, to make sure what happened in Minneapolis didn't repeat in a major city like Seattle. Gov. Christine Gregoire has taken an approach of less risk-taking.

On Aug. 2, Gregoire asked for a report on all 3,000 of Washington's bridges. After seeing what happened in Minneapolis, Gregoire become particularly concerned about the state Route 520 bridge across Lake Washington and the Alaskan Way Viaduct along Elliott Bay.

With all the hubbub we've heard about the viaduct for the last few years, concerns over its safety could speed up its repair or replacement.

The Lake Washington Ship Canal Bridge, which was built more than three decades ago, has received inspection recommendations from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Inspections of that particular bridge took place in mid-August of this year, and results are not yet available.

Those results could raise safety concerns, but for now local officials seem satisfied. King County bridge inspection head Tim Lane has said that the bridge is "pretty well built."

The state Route 99/Aurora Bridge over the ship canal has raised concerns, as well. Harvey Coffman, the state head of bridge inspections, has said that the bridge is "functionally obsolete."

A MINNEAPOLIS HERE?

Most people would agree that the inspection process needs to be thorough for anything significant to come about.

Minneapolis had passed bridge inspections for years, according to the International Herald Tribune, only to collapse into ruin recently.

Most people in the press aren't engineers by any stretch of the imagination, but both pundits and reporters are familiar with government putting bandages on a sore in order to look like they are solving the problem.

In an interview with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Redmond driver David Wotten expressed his wide-ranging concern: "Frankly, every bridge over 40 years old is suspect in my mind."

Wotten may be right, and unless inspections are followed up by action, what happened in Minneapolis could happen again.

Seattle University student interviews Ron Paul

I'm not an SU student, but instead a WSU one, but I'll be doing a little promotion of SU by posting some of their videos of Ron Paul's speech. And yes, I know I said I'm on break from blogging at Townhall, and that still stands. I'm limitting myself to news that I feel relates to this blog directly, such as news oriented around Seattle, autism, etc.

Video: Kucinich disses the President on Syrian TV

Another day, another ridiculous politician.

This time it's Dennis Kucinich going to Syria, going onto their state-run television and using it as a vehicle for dumping on the President of the United States. MEMRI has the video.

"General Petraeus or General Betray Us?"

I'm sure you've heard by now about the Moveon.org assault on Gen. Petraeus ahead of his giving an assessment of progress in Iraq. Glenn Beck said it well today:

If a military General comes out with the least bit of negative news, he is lauded as the greatest human being to ever live. Give an honest assessment? Then of course they are just a Bush chronie with no brain of their own.

The Moveon ad in question can be viewed on their website.
