The Elder has (not) spoken

"The Elders have spoken" was a headline given in an editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle when the Iraq Study Group's final report was issued. While talking about that headline and the general reaction toward the ISG's findings on the conflict in Iraq, Mark Steyn said that the press was acting as if we were a small indigenous people in Papa New Guinea.

..I believe, in fact, the San Francisco Chronicle actually use the headline, The Elders Have Spoken, as if we are some primitive tribe in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, and the wise men have consulted the ruins, and pronounced for the rest of us.

I was reminded of that quip while reading about Pat Robertson's announcement that there will be a "mass killing" within the United States. While that's always a possibility, I don't think we have to take that much stock in what Robertson predicts. Here was his prediction for 2006:

In his report today, Robertson said, “Bush is going to strengthen in 2006. The fall elections will be inconclusive, but the outcome of the war and the success of the economy will leave Republicans in charge…. And Alito is gonna get confirmed. I believe another liberal judge is going to retire, step down from the Court; we’ll have another opening there. The war in Iraq is going to come to a successful conclusion, and we’ll begin withdrawing troops before the end of the year.”
