I was listening to the Dennis Prager show today, and Prager sited that only 17 people have been killed by stingrays since 1860. After checking up on Wikipedia, it appears Steve Irwin really was unique:

Fatal stings, such as that which killed Australian naturalist and television personality Steve Irwin in 2006 (sting to the heart),[2] are extremely rare. As of 1996, worldwide known deaths from stingray barb injuries numbered 17.
